Mrunal Thakur Leads a Dime-Store Thriller About Grown-Up Themes

The over-designed social drama struggles to stay mature about the premise of an ‘imperfect’ woman who is put on trial for the suicide of her boyfriend
Pooja Meri Jaan opens with a dramatic Romeo and Juliet rendition on a Delhi stage. The Shakespearean tragedy ends with both deaths, there is applause, and the lead actors proceed to hijack the spotlight: ‘Romeo’ Aniket (Vikram Singh Chauhan) proposes to ‘Juliet’ Pooja (Mrunal Thakur) in front of a packed theatre. Seconds later, she rejects him backstage. He is devastated, her words hurt, he rides home in the rain like a broken Vishesh Films hero — and kills himself. Pooja is soon booked for abetment of suicide, and the rest of the film revolves around her trial in the court of public opinion.

Promising Mrunal Thakur Film Let Down by Its Treatment

Mrunal Thakur's Pooja is the kind of modern, independent young woman whom the manosphere - desi or elsewhere - hates.
Pooja (Mrunal Thakur) is in the dock. Her jilted boyfriend Aniket (Vikram Singh Chauhan) is dead, and the blame has been placed squarely upon her slender shoulders. Her lawyer Sana (Huma Qureshi) is not well-versed in criminal law, but she’s a friend, something the investigating officer Jatin (Vijay Raaz) is clearly not. He’s convinced that Pooja is responsible, and vows to make her pay. Pooja is the kind of modern, independent young woman whom the manosphere — desi or elsewhere — hates. She has a busy dating life, and doesn’t think that it’s her job to rescue the men she’s with. It’s even-stevens, and if the men have a problem, there’s the door. Which is pretty much how it should be, but of course it’s not, whether it’s in the movies or real life.

Mrunal Thakur Steers a Sterile Critique of Male Entitlement

Director Navjot Gulati presents contrasting perspectives and valid talking points on the social fallout when a girl chooses to say no.
A timely critique of patriarchal definitions of consent and female agency, Pooja Meri Jaanworks like a companion piece to films like Pink and Article 375. Operating beneath the veneer of failed romance and a courtroom thriller, the narrative interrogates the limits of male obsession and the sharp societal backlash faced by a self-actualised woman asserting her autonomy. The plot follows Pooja (Mrunal Thakur), a young woman whose firm rejection of her longtime friend Aniket’s (Vikram Singh Chauhan) romantic advances triggers a chain reaction that upends her life.
