Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is a thoroughly unhinged and deeply misogynistic sequel that trades a coherent plot for a never-ending parade of celebrity cameos and slow-motion walking. The film’s baffling second half transforms Rajinikanth’s character into a CIA-level director operating at Fast & Furious levels of absurdity. We discuss the frustratingly low bar for mass masala entertainers, particularly the script’s reliance on outdated male gaze tropes, item songs, and bizarrely exposing costumes for female fighters. Additionally, we poke holes in the film’s 1960s-era James Bond villain logic, where antagonists willingly explain their plans. We also wonder if the franchise has completely lost its emotional core, relying entirely on its addictive background music and an Om Shanti Om-style conveyor belt of guest stars to keep audiences engaged.

Rajinikanth Looks Right at Home in Nelson's Sequel

‘Jailer 2’, like the first film, is a rare late-stage Rajinikanth work that doesn't demand kinetic stunts and cuts around him, and allows the actor to project an easy magnetism

Two months have passed since the events of Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer (2023). After dissolving Varman’s (Vinayakan) body in acid, Tiger Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth) is quietly living as a supermarket supervisor somewhere in the hills near Coimbatore. He doesn’t look for trouble, but it tends to follow him, first in the form of a young man picking up a street fight and then by way of a government officer who, in a petty show of might, simply torments the family by supplying dirty water. All this is in keeping with Nelson’s low-key treatment of Rajinikanth’s star wattage, making him a leaner, meaner family man who prefers to delegate action rather than wield it himself. Muthuvel solves the water issue on his own and when push comes to shove, a mild thrashing does the job. Nothing life-threatening. Nelson maintains the same somber beginnings of the first film.

What new can a formulaic Tamil actioner offer in 2026? At a time when global event cinema is finding new ways to engage with themes such as climate change and animal abuse, our superstar vehicles remain stubbornly risk-averse. In a political and cultural climate where taking a stance carries commercial liability, a legend of Rajinikanth’s stature is unlikely to put his legacy on the line. And that is precisely where Jailer 2 fails to flourish: it prioritises maximum scale and safe fan-service over any kind of narrative courage. Back in 2023, director Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer delivered unadulterated Thalaivar spectacle. Despite a wafer-thin plot, Rajinikanth carried the weight on his shoulders, bolstered by showy cameos, a viral soundtrack, and Nelson’s signature deadpan dark comedy. It was hardly innovative, but it knew exactly what it had going for it and had fun with its superstar.

A Hilariously Dark Nelson Film That Eventually Settles for Superstar Safety

Maybe it’s the very qualities that make Nelson's films so enjoyable in the first place that keep him from finding a seamless transition from his quirky, dark-comedy sensibilities to more serious territory.

Speaking broadly, the structure upon which Nelson builds both his Jailer films is strictly pedestrian. They’re based on uncovering complex trade networks exporting priceless sculptures from Southern India. They’re also written around the tension that arises from discovering the powers that the next big boss, Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, must encounter as he climbs the corporate ladder of this idol theft enterprise. If Jailer was all about Muthuvel taking on the foot soldiers and middle management, the stakes only get bigger in this film as he schemes against those at the top of the pyramid.

Sharp first half, strained second, and a villain-proof hero whose real enemy is his own past: Jailer 2 is frivolous cinema with a surprisingly emotional core

Black and Blue, the fifth episode of the sixth season of Vince Gilligan’s Better Call Saul, begins—like a lot of cold openings typical of Gilligan’s work—with a silent montage of an artisan encasing a slide rule in a block of clear acrylic. The engraving reads, “In Liebe… Deine Jungs” (“With love… your boys”), and the piece is packed into a wooden box. (It becomes a cardinal sin to invoke the series without mentioning how criminally underwatched it is. So, here you go: it is criminally underwatched.) If you’ve managed to watch up to this episode, you already know that this setup will have a massive payoff. You also know that you will completely forget about it within a few minutes, as you get engrossed in the incredible writing of one of modern-day long-form geniuses. But when the payoff hits, the memory of the setup rains down on you!

Rajinikanth's Swagger and Nelson's Humour Strike Gold Again

Director Nelson's Jailer 2, starring Rajinikanth, SJ Suryah and Vidya Balan, is a fitting sequel that is high on aura. With ample elevation scenes and Rajinikanth doing what he does best, Jailer 2 offers a memorable theatrical experience.

“Alapara Kelaparom. Thalaivar nirandharam.” These lines from Hukum, the chartbuster from Jailer, loosely translate to unleashing mayhem and declaring the Thalaivar eternal. They don’t just capture Rajinikanth’s larger-than-life aura; they also sum up the enduring appeal of a superstar who continues to command the big screen. Directing a sequel to a hit film is one thing. Following up a Rajinikanth blockbuster that grossed Rs 600 crore worldwide is an entirely different ball game. For Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 is a Himalayan task, with the filmmaker attempting to recreate the swagger, humour and mass appeal of its predecessor. He largely reaches the summit, even if the journey takes a few detours.
