Prabhas's horror comedy is devoid of charm, thrills and chills

Sat, January 10 2026

Director Maruthi's The Raja Saab, starring Prabhas, Sanjay Dutt and Nidhhi Agerwal, is a fantasy horror comedy that relies heavily on the lead actor. However, there's hardly anything that's redeemable in this soulless film.

Prabhas’s much-anticipated film, The Raja Saab is about a search for a missing grandfather. Over its three-hour runtime, viewers also end up searching for more than a grandfather. They seek plot cohesion, character depth, genuine scares, or consistent entertainment value - must-haves for every film. Like the film’s protagonist wandering through a haunted palace, you may feel a lack of clear direction or a fully satisfying destination. The Raja Saab begins with Raja (Prabhas) living with his grandmother Gangamma, played by Zarina Wahab. Gangamma suffers from Alzheimer’s and remembers only her missing husband Kanakaraju (Sanjay Dutt) and her grandson. She tells Raja to keep looking for his missing grandfather, who often appears in her dreams.

Vikram Prabhu film tackles minority struggle, bias with quiet strength

Fri, December 26 2025

Director Suresh Rajakumari's Sirai, starring Vikram Prabhu, LK Akshay Kumar and Anishma, is a crisp procedural drama. With restrained performances and exceptional social commentary on minority oppression, the film serves as a fitting conclusion to 2025.

Actor Vikram Prabhu’s choice of scripts has been impressive in the recent past. His upcoming venture, Sirai, marks his second collaboration with writer Tamizh (also an actor) after their critically acclaimed Taanakkaran. Sirai, like Taanakkaran, casts Vikram Prabhu’s protagonist as a police officer, but from the district armed reserve wing.

Mohanlal's reincarnation drama lacks novelty, is endlessly long

Thu, December 25 2025

The film, directed by Nanda Kishore and starring Mohanlal with Samarjit Lankesh, is a fantasy action drama centred on reincarnation. The film lacks technical finesse and feels uninspired.

Mohanlal has had a phenomenal 2025 with three consecutive hits. He started the year strong with L2: Empuraan, followed it up with a delicious crime thriller, Thudarum and struck a hat-trick with the heartwarming Hridayapoorvam. Vrusshabha is his fourth film as a hero (barring cameos in Kannappa and Bha Bha Ba). Did the film succeed in impressing the audience? Let’s find out!

Nivin Pauly's ghost story is irresistible, full of charm

Thu, December 25 2025

Director Akhil Sathyan's horror comedy, starring Nivin Pauly, Riya Shibu and Aju Varghese, feels like a warm embrace on a cold winter night. With fantasy elements, the film sheds light on faith, belief, grief and feeling the joy.

Sarvam Maya translates to “everything is an illusion,” and it is perhaps the perfect title for this Nivin Pauly-starrer that blends horror, comedy and fantasy. Releasing on Christmas, the film is an antidote to all the extra-violent, hyper-masculine films that rely on over-the-top theatrics. But, Sarvam Maya leaves you laughing out loud despite tackling sensitive topics like faith, belief and grief.

Nivin Pauly cures his recent slump with this OTT thriller

Sun, December 21 2025

Director PR Arun's web series Pharma, starring Nivin Pauly and Rajit Kapur, is a battle between a common man and a corporate giant. Set in the pharmaceutical world, the show is gripping despite minor shortcomings.

Nivin Pauly delivered the only and greatest comeback of the week. A character in the film calls him the Comeback King and by the end of the show, you realise why. Pharma, being his foray into the OTT space, brought back memories of the films that the actor nailed in the past. While the past few years have seen fewer films and fewer hits, it feels like a huge relief to see him having so much control over his craft in PR Arun’s Pharma. The eight-episode series, streaming on JioHotstar, is a delightful thriller, though with minor shortcomings.

No logic, no madness in Dileep's vile attempt at meta film

Thu, December 18 2025

Directed by Dhananjay Shankar, Bha Bha Ba, starring Dileep and Vineeth Sreenivasan, is an attempt at madcap comedy with numerous meta references. The film, however, feels more like Dileep asserting his innocence in the wake of his recent acquittal.

Bha Bha Ba, short for Bhayam, Bhakthi, Bahumanam (fear, devotion, respect), is billed as Dileep’s “great comeback” that he has been waiting for. From the trailer to the film’s promotional materials, the film is regarded as the actor’s biggest return to comedy, a genre that originally defined his career. With Mohanlal playing a cameo, will Bha Bha Ba help Dileep deliver the “comeback” that he’s hoping for? Keep reading to know what we feel.

Stephen

Thriller (Tamil)

A psychological thriller that spins out of control

Sat, December 6 2025

Directed by Mithun Balaji, Stephen is a psychological crime thriller featuring Gomathi Shankar, Smruti Venkat and Michael in key roles. The film delves deep into the psyche of a serial killer and what contributed to it.

The initial frames of Stephen feature a young boy looking up at a giant wheel in awe. Soon, he begins hearing voices of his mother and father asking him to join them on the ride. And when he gets on the giant wheel, it spins. Watching director Mithun Balaji’s two-hour-long Stephen, you understand that the wheel never stops once it begins spinning. Stephen Jebaraj (Gomathi Shankar) confesses to the serial killing of nine women in six months. He surrenders to the police matter-of-factly. Michael (Michael Thangadurai) is entrusted with the job of finding the motive behind the murders. Helping him in evaluating Stephen is psychiatrist Seema (Smruthi Venkat), who, through her conversations with him, uncovers the truth behind the murders.
